Vehicle break-in spree lessening

The recent spree of vehicle break-ins in Solana Beach seems to have subsided, for at least a week.

From Feb. 22 to Feb. 26, there were eight reported thefts from cars in the western section of the city. The week of March 4 included seven more reports, but these were mainly in the areas closer to interstate-5.

However, only two vehicle break-ins were reported in the period of March 5 to March 12. They were across the city from each other and on separate nights.

Detective Kevin Price of the Encinitas Sheriff's department said no arrests have been made.

"We've been addressing it by following certain people or keeping up with certain people we think may be involved," he said.

Price said several of the break-ins have involved people leaving valuables in their car without the locking the doors.

"Sometimes it takes something like this to get people to remember (to lock their cars)," he said. "Our crime prevention unit has been generating a lot of flyers and putting out a lot of fliers in various neighborhoods and business just to alert people."

Price said deputies are fingerprinting the vehicles, but that it can take several months to get results due to the large number of requests at the county's crime lab.
