The first of several local events leading up to the March 18 healthcare reform vote in Congress began last night in Solana Beach.

Members of this city's district of Organizing for America, a group committed to helping President Obama implement his plans, met last night with Councilman Dave Roberts for an update on the status of healthcare reform legislature.

"[President Obama] said it was going to take time, and he said we can't wait another year, unfortunately it's been another year and we still have not gotten it done," Roberts said, adding that despite this there has been some progress made.

The councilman compared and contrasted Obama's proposal with what members of the 50th congressional district OFA suggested in writing after he was elected. The event, attended by roughly 30 people, was a precursor to two others leading up to next week's vote:

- Members will meet 10 a.m., Saturday at the La Costa Coffee Roasting Co. in Carlsbad for a phone bank to encourage public participation and action in advancing healthcare reform.

- The week will culminate with a rally in downtown San Diego on Tuesday known as the "Final March for Health Reform." Representatives from the offices of Sens. Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein, as well as those of Congressman Bob Filner and Congresswoman Susan Davis will address the crowd.

Those interested in participating in the rally can join members of the OFA by taking the 9:45 a.m. Coaster from the Solana Beach train station. Known as "All Aboard for Health Reform," the idea came from member and local resident Roger Boyd

"It's very motivating to see people think beyond their own personal lives and for the betterment of our country," he said.

The rally is being promoted as a non-partisan event to pass legislation on healthcare reform.
