A program for training people to work in San Diego's biotech industry will get $4.95 million in federal economic stimulus funds, it was announced Tuesday.
The three-year grant, which comes through the U.S. Department of Labor, will fund the Biotechnology Readiness, Immersion, Certification and Degrees for Gainful Employment project - BRIDGE for short.
The project is a partnership between San Diego State University, BIOCOM, the San Diego Workforce Partnership and the Southern California Biotechnology Center at San Diego Miramar College.
It aims to provide education, training and placement services to more than 1,000 military veterans and unemployed people in the San Diego area, with a focus on the need for clinical laboratory scientists, medical laboratory technicians, medical physicists and professional scientists.
The grant is part of more than $225 million in Recovery Act funding aimed at creating jobs in health care and other industries.
